On World Children’s Day in Porto, more than 250 children and teenagers, between the ages of 4 and 16 co-created a large graphical message on public space. A 40 meters long sentence “WE HAVE RIGHTS, WE DESIGN THE FUTURE” created by a class of 16-year-olds in collaboration with a public art school, communicates a clear and impactful statement about children’s rights and their role in shaping the future.

We invited children aged 4 to 12 to add their messages and graphics to the collective art piece, empowering them to express their thoughts, opinions, and feelings on the ground, in chalk, on a surface of over 500 square metres on the pavement, in the urban space. This helped boost their self-confidence and awareness of their own agency in the world and it was an incredible way to celebrate World Children’s Day!

In this episode, also as a representative of the Porto Chapter of the Designing for Children’s Rights Association (D4CR), I talk to Polina Lulu, from the Tel Aviv Chapter, about this powerful event and also about co-creation with children, about children’s right to public space and the involvement of the community in this action of activism through Design.
